Weekend Review | A Quick Trip Down Memory Lane

It's been a minute since we've done a weekend review! It's hard to keep up with documenting what I'm doing every single weekend. But I intend on making more of an effort to post these reviews more often.

GUEST ROOM REFRESH

It started on Friday when I spent the day sprucing up the guest room for my MIL's stay with us. I wanted to make the room feel really special for her, so not only did I straighten up, but I also made a cute little welcome basket for her. Complete with shampoo, conditioner, magazines, snacks and anything else she might need during her stay.

OVERNIGHT IN AVILA

This weekend, my husband, mother and I headed down the coast to meet up with my mother in law who hopped on the California Surfliner up from Southern California to come for a visit. We met up in San Luis Obispo, one of the places on my Favorite California Travel Destinations post, and spent the weekend lounging by the beach, eating (arguably) the best pizza in California, and playing rummy while we watched live action Disney movies.

Whenever I tell people that my husband and our moms often spend time together, I'm always met with comments like, "What?!" and "That's so cool!" I don't think any of us realized how unusual it is that the four of us get along so well and enjoy spending time together. This isn't the first time the four of us have gone on a little trip or spent the day together. C and I feel really lucky that our moms get along so well. In fact, at our wedding, they said the best thing to come out of our relationship, was that they found each other. They absolutely adore each other which makes planning for holidays or vacations really easy.

We booked two rooms at our favorite hotel here in SLO, The Inn at Avila Beach. The moms shared one that was decorated like the Tiki Room in Disneyland, and we got one with a balcony and ocean view.

I always love coming down here because it reminds me so much of my time here with friends in college. My best friend and I still make jokes about coming down to visit her brother and the shenanigans we would get into back in our early 20s. Good, good times.

For our first day, we lounged on the balcony for a while and then headed straight to our favorite pizza place, Flour House. Funny enough, the first time I ate there was with said best friend, her brother, and a bunch of college kids back in 2016. The pizza is so delicious, you would honestly think you were transported to Italy.

It's neapolitan style pizza, which I have decided is my favorite. Honestly, you can keep the American style pizza that's covered in copious amounts of cheese and thick dough. This pizza has a fluffy crust and thin dough, barely any cheese, and is packed with flavor. We got the Carmanucc pizza and the Autunno, both absolutely delicious. They also have a gluten free crust that I'm convinced they're lying to us about being gluten free, it's that good.

After dinner we drove up to a lookout spot to get some pictures of the phenomenal views and take in the ocean a bit more.

When we returned to the hotel, we pulled out the playing cards to play about 5 rounds of rummy. Of which I somehow won 0. There was even one game where I didn't get to put a single card down! It was not my night. But we played while watching the live action Beauty and the Beast, which was so lovely. I remember when that movie came out, I was so opposed to Emma Watson as the lead, but watching it again, I feel like she was an amazing choice! She truly embodied Belle and she did a phenomenal job. After that we watched the live action Cinderella, another great, feel-good classic.

The next morning, we woke up early to grab breakfast on the rooftop deck at Joe Momma's Coffee. We got egg casseroles, croissants, and coffee. I had a delicious oat milk chai to go along with my meal and it was all so good. Choosing a hotel with a good complimentary breakfast is such a travel hack.

Afterwards, my MIL, C and I went for a walk along the beach. Per usual, my husband wanted to jump in the freezing cold water as we watched on in horror. I have never been a fan of cold water, so a polar plunge is really not my style. I'm always so shocked and impressed that he finds...joy in running into freezing cold water. Is it bad if I say he's crazy? Because he is.

It's been such a fun and relaxing weekend and we're so excited to have my MIL staying with us for the next few weeks! Have a wonderful week ahead!

F.
